One Healthy Calf per Cow per Year in Barabali Village

Abstrak

The West Nusa Tenggara Province is one of three major national sources for cattle production; therefore, maintaining the cattle population is essential. One strategy to achieve this is the intensification of cattle farming to ensure a "one cow, one calf one year and healthy". To this end, a community outreach program was conducted in Barabali Village, Batu Keliang District, Central Lombok Regency, involving 25 cattle farmers. This location was selected because, while the Bali cattle population in Barabali Village is relatively high, the calving rate remains comparatively low. The program focused on strategies to ensure each cow produces one healthy calf annually. The activity utilized a combination of classroom lectures and discussions followed by visits to group-owned cattle pens. Pre-activity evaluations revealed that, among the 25 participants, knowledge regarding the distinguishing characteristics of superior Bali cattle was limited to just two out of eight traits: their red coat color and white legs extending up to the knees. Similarly, only 60% of participants were familiar with the signs of estrus in cattle. Furthermore, 100% of the participants admitted that their feeding strategies never took the animals' physiological needs into account. A post-training evaluation showed a significant improvement, with knowledge regarding the three discussed aspects rising to 100%. The primary challenge identified was a shortage of feed during the dry season. To address this feed limitation, the outreach team provided Lamtoro Taramba seeds for propagation and planting at the onset of the rainy season.
