Abstract

Twenty-first-century learning demands the strengthening of higher-order thinking skills; consequently, innovative teaching materials are required to enhance pupils’ critical thinking abilities. This study aims to develop a ‘Shuffle and Recall’ card-based teaching aid utilising deep learning pedagogical principles (to promote meaningful, high-cognitive engagement) to equip Year 5 primary school pupils with critical thinking skills in science lessons. Based on observations at SDN Kanggraksan, teaching is still dominated by the use of textbooks and workbooks, resulting in students being less active and their critical thinking skills not developing optimally. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, comprising the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The suitability of the teaching aid was assessed through validation by subject matter, media, and language experts, as well as through a student response test involving [insert number, e.g., 32] Year 5 pupils at a state primary school in Cirebon City. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, pre- and post-tests, and documentation. Quantitative data were analysed based on the results of the validation, questionnaires, and pre-test and post-test scores, whilst qualitative data were analysed descriptively based on the results of observations, interviews, and expert input. The research findings indicate that the card-based media developed was able to enhance pupils’ enthusiasm for learning, critical thinking skills, and understanding of science subject matter. This study suggests that the card-based media can serve as an engaging, interactive alternative for learning that supports the development of pupils’ critical thinking skills.
